Biology AS level at Wren Academy
Biology is traditionally one of the most popular A level subjects. Students study a range of exciting topics which cover the science behind life itself. These range from how molecules behave within a single cell to the complex series of interactions which make up entire ecosystems. Biology is a rapidly developing science relevant to student’s lives which frequently covers subjects in the news headlines. Many students choose Biology in combination with other science subjects, maths or geography. It is also a popular stand alone choice due to the subject material and the transferable nature of the skills taught.
1. Biological molecules
3. Organisms exchange substances with their environment
4. Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
Students will need to gain two A grades either in double award or separate sciences (including Biology) at GCSE to pursue this subject at AS and A2 Level. They will also require a B grade in Maths.
Students will write two exams, paper 1 and paper 2. Each paper is 90 minutes long, contributes to 50% of the AS qualification and will assess any content from topics 1to 4 and any relevant practical skills. Paper 1 consists of short answer and comprehension questions while paper 2 consists of short answer and extended response questions. Marks from AS do not count towards the final A level grade.
Many students who study Biology go on to choose a biologically related degree course. These can lead to careers in health and clinical professions such as medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, nursing, zoology or forensic science. The skills taught such as problem solving, research and evaluating are valuable in many professions and life science graduates are in high demand in professions such as computing, accounting or law.
