Sport Btec Level 3 Extended Diploma at Writhlington School

Course description

Btec Sport is aimed at students with an interest in sport, exercise and health and includes a range of practical and theory based lessons in order to give students an insight into a variety of sports based careers or further study.

You will study a variety of areas in sport, including but not limited to sports leadership, psychology and the leisure industry.

The course will cover 14 units, 10 of which are mandatory and 4 are externally assessed.

Year 12

Unit 1: Anatomy & Physiology

Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being

Unit 19: Development and Provision of Sport & Physical Activity

Unit 22: Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry

Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry

Unit 4: Sports Leadership

Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance

Year 13

Unit 8: Coaching for Performance

Unit 9: Research Methods in Sport

Unit 23: Skill Acquisition in Sport

Unit 18: Sports Injury Management



Entry requirements

Five GCSE Grade 4 to 9 including English and Maths. Level 2 Btec or GCSE PE would be beneficial but not essential.


You will sit one written examination during Year 12. You will prepare 3 tasks which are marked externally, the remaining units of work will complete an internally assessed portfolio.

Future opportunities

PE teaching, sports coach, fitness instructor, leisure industry, physiotherapist, sports development.

Further information

The course will involve day trips to University of Bath to extend learning, as well as work experience in the PE department and Sports Centre.
