English Literature AS/A2 Level at East Berkshire College

Course description

'Reading is a means of thinking with another person's mind: it forces you to stretch your own.'

If you don't need to be convinced that reading is a valuable activity, but wish to extend yourself by extending what you read, this course will provide you with the tools for the job.

You will learn how to read critically, widely and with informed judgement some of the most influential and thought-provoking texts ever written in English.


Course content

You will follow the two AS modules of the AS specification.

You will study in depth poetry, prose and drama texts based on a common theme, related to the social and historical context in which they were produced.

You will learn how to respond to texts that are unfamiliar and challenging.

You will produce coursework following an area of study over which you will have some choice.

Entry requirements

There is an entry requirement of five GCSEs at grade C and above including English Language.


The course is delivered through classroom-based activities, lectures and seminars with particular emphasis on class discussion and shared ideas on texts.

Independent student study is also required.

Further information
