Childcare and Education Level 2 Other Qualification at Weatherhead High School

Course description

Successful completion of the whole course gives you the opportunity to seek employment e.g. nursery assistant or pre-school assistant. You can also progress to Level 3 courses in Childcare and Education. You can also progress to Level 3 courses in Childcare and Education. You will need to achieve at least a B grade in the Level 2 Diploma in order to be considered for successful transfer to the Level 3 programme and a successful interview.

Course content

This is a level 2 qualification which trains you to work with children as an assistant. The one year course offers you the opportunity to combine school based learning alongside practical work in local primary schools and nurseries. You will form part of the team responsible for organising and running 'Weathertots' our community 'mums and toddler' group. You will spend two days in practical training and three days focusing on the theory aspects of the course.

Entry requirements

Entrance onto the Level 2 course requires 2 GCSEs at grade D or above, (one of which must be English Language or Literature) and by formal interview. You will also need to successfully complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Assessment

Assessment:

The course is designed to be assessed at three stages - we would expect all students to complete all 3 stages.

Award level = units 1 & 2

Certificate level = units 1,2,3,4,5, and an external assessment

Diploma level = units 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 2 external assessments

AWARD LEVEL

Unit 1: An introduction to working with young children - assessment task

Unit 2: The developing child - assignment task

CERTIFICATE LEVEL:

Units 1 and 2 as above

Unit 3: Safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children - external examination

Unit 4: Children and play - assessment task

Unit 5: Communication and professional skills within childcare and education - portfolio work

External assessment - short answer test based on a seen case study

DIPLOMA LEVEL

All assessment for the Award and Certificate levels

Unit 6: The child care practitioner in the work place - approx. 65 days placement, Practical Evidence Records, Practical Evidence Diary, Professional Development Portfolios

Unit 7: Working with children under 5 years - assessment task

Future opportunities

Successful completion of the whole course gives you the opportunity to seekemployment eg. Nursery assistant or pre-school assistant. You can also progress to level 3 courses in Childcare and Education or NVQs.

Further information

For placement you will need dark coloured trousers. The work placement is a compulsory part of the course and all students need to be fully committed to this aspect
