AQA English Literature AS level

Course content

Two units are studied. Unit 1 (60%) “Aspects of Narrative” is 
examined. Texts are The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Great 
Gatsby, The Kite Runner and some Browning poems. Students study 
narrative techniques across different genres. 
Unit 2 (40%)
“Dramatic Genres” involves producing two pieces of coursework  
on a Shakespeare comedy and a modern comedy by Wilde.
At A2, two further units are studied. Unit 3, “Elements of the 
Gothic” is examined (closed book) and is worth 30% of the A level. 
Unit 4 (20%) is entitled “Further and Independent Reading” and 
requires two pieces of coursework on texts chosen by the student.
Students learn about critical theories and how to apply them to 
texts. Discursive essay writing style is developed and students are 
expected to read widely, undertake independent research and  
give presentations.

Entry requirements

GCSE English Language and English Literature at Grade B or above.


40% Coursework on the Comedy Genre (2 pieces each 1500 words)

60% examination (Open Book) Aspects of Narrative

Texts are provided by school, but students can buy their own if they wish to.

English Literature is a highly regarded academic subject which leads to many different avenues of study, including degrees in English Literature, Creative Writing, Law, Journalism, Humanities and the Social Sciences.

Further information

There are no compulsory costs but the school offers the chance to go on courses and trips associated with the subject which may involve some financial contribution.
