Graphic Design Extended Diploma Level 3 at Southport College
This course will provide you with extensive knowledge and experience in a full range of design disciplines and problem solving. 50% of the projects are ‘live’ which means you’ll be working to a real-life brief. In the past, students have rebranded a bar, created a corporate identity for an architect and designed badges, stickers and postcards for Grizedale Forest. The course is very well resourced and includes two Mac suites, a photography studio and a film and TV studio.
You will learn how to think logically and creatively to solve visual communication problems whilst working in a professional environment. You will study a
range of projects including:
• Posters, letterheads, business cards and label design
• Marketing & Photography
• Web Design
• Traditional & computer-based illustration
• Image manipulation
• Editorial design
During the second year, you will be introduced to advertising, packaging design, web page design, business practice and photography. The course includes a short work placement, giving you the opportunity to use your skills in an operational business. Previous students have spent time in graphic design studios, advertising agencies, printers and architects, with some achieving paid summer work as a result.
You may also have the opportunity to visit New York City as part of the course.
• Minimum 5 GCSEs at A*- C including English or Merit in a related Level 2 Diploma and C or above in English
• Four GCSEs at grades A*- C with a strong portfolio may be considered for entry on to the course
• Good portfolio
• Successful interview
• Satisfactory reference
You will be continuously assessed throughout the course.
There will be material costs on the course e.g. sketchbooks, marker pens, mount board, photography paper & film etc. A full list will be sent out at before the course commences. You will be givent he opportunity to take part in internation trips eg New York and local trips eg Grizdale.
On successful completion, you may progress on to degree courses such as Graphic Design, Advertising, Computer-aided Design (CAD), Illustration, Photography, Design Management, Animation or Fashion Promotion, Advertising. You could also seek employment as a Junior Designer.
