Art and Design at Brentwood County High School

Course description

Through the units you will study the formal elements of Art through practical work and the study of a range of different artists and designers. You will explore the use of many different materials and equipment and cover a wide range of different disciplines.

We place a strong emphasis on analytical drawing and painting from observation. A considerable amount of the curriculum time is spent working from observation, and you are expected to use your free time to develop ideas and responses to the project briefs. Independent research is expected on the work of artists and designers: trips are made to galleries and you may be required to make independent visits at certain times throughout the year. Work journals are used to record observations, ideas, working methods, experiments and gallery visits. In Year 13 the course will continue to be structured, however, it will be expected that the students’ work will become increasingly individual and personally challenging
