Law AS A2 at The Rushden Community College

Course content

At AS Level, the two modules studied cover the English Legal System. These include: Unit 1 - The Personnel of the Legal System e.g. Juries, Solicitors, Barristers and Judges and the Civil and Criminal Legal Process e.g. from arrest of a suspect through to sentencing. Unit 2 - Sources of Law e.g. how European Law is made and its effect on English law. At A2 Level, the two modules studied will cover the Law of Tort. Here the students will learn the legal principles that decide cases in this area and will learn to apply them to factual situations. The modules studied will include the following: Unit 1 - The Law of Negligence e.g. actions for compensation following a medical operation that is carelessly performed. Unit 2 - Assault and Battery e.g. how to sue for compensation if someone physically attacks you. Unit 3 - The Law of Nuisance e.g. your rights against noisy neighbours who destroy your right to enjoy your property.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades C or above. No prior knowledge of Law is required.


At AS Level, two modules are studied and each module is examined by way of a written exam that is one hour long. At A2 Level, two further modules are studied. Each of these modules is also assessed by way of a written exam. The AS result counts as 50% of the A2 grade. There is no coursework at either AS or A2 Level. AS one year, A2 two years.
