Public Services - NCFE Level 2 Diploma for Entry to the Uniformed Services at City College Brighton and Hove

Course description

Would you like to learn the skills, discipline and knowledge required to equip you for a career in the police force, fire service, ambulance service, army or navy?

Our exciting, active Public Services department provides you with all the support you need to get qualified and employed, or ready for university. On any level of programme, you can expect to study teamwork, leadership and interpersonal skills through your BTEC, DofE and Basic Expedition Leaders Award.

You will gain understanding of citizenship and diversity, politics and discipline, along with knowledge of the wide-ranging career opportunities in the Public Services. Based at our East Campus, you will have immediate access to fantastic sports facilities. You will also enjoy the specialist units such as outdoor and adventure expeditions, fitness training, expedition skills and water-based activities.

Learning will be varied and creative with an emphasis on practical skills, teamwork and fitness. You will visit public service organisations and hear guest speakers talking about their real-life public service experiences. The course also provides outward-bound expeditions and training opportunities with both the Armed Forces and Sussex Police.

Course content

This is a practical work-related course for people considering a career in the Public
Services e.g. Police, Fire, Ambulance, Prison Service or Armed Forces.

You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

  • Public Service Skills (10 credits)
  • Employment in the Uniformed Public Services (5 credits)
  • Career Planning for the Public Services (5 credits)
  • Improving Health and Fitness for Entry to the Uniformed Public Services (10 credits)
  • Adventurous Activities and Teamwork for the Public Services (10 credits)
  • Sport and Recreation in the Public Services (10 credits)
  • Expedition Skills in Public Services (10 credits)

Entry requirements

Students should have minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including GCSE English and GCSE Mathmatics.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Pre-entry preparation:
You will need to keep up-to-date with any news concerning the Public Services and any voluntary work you do would prove useful.

Assessment

Assessment is through completion of a series of practical and coursework based assignment.

Financial information

All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2016. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.

Future opportunities

After successfully completing this course you may feel that the natural next step in your education and training will be to apply onto the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Public Services.
