German A Level at Monks' Dyke Tennyson College

Course description

Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Students learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. By making comparisons, they gain insight into their own culture and society. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.

Course content

Throughout the course, students participate in activities involving speaking, listening, reading and writing. A range of tasks are undertaken to develop skills, such as role-play, discussions and comprehension. The relevance of this qualification to the real world is emphasised by looking at the world of work through real business tasks. Students will also be expected to produce more extended pieces of writing in their work.

Entry requirements

Students entering the Form who have not attained grade C or above in GCSE English or Mathematics will be required to re-take those subjects in Year 12 to acquire the C or above result.

Future opportunities

This qualification is seen as essential in a range of careers such as translator, interpreter, bi-lingual secretary and languages teacher.
