Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness) BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Bebington High Sports College

Course description

The BTEC Sports course is a challenging yet hugely rewarding course that is a starting point for a career in the sports and leisure industry. It builds upon the Level 2 BTEC course and is ideal for those who take a keen interest in sports, coaching, leadership, the human body and current issues in the world of sport.

Course content

The assignments in the Sport BTEC diploma are all practically based. You can resubmit work more than once. There are no exams!! There will be opportunity to go on many trips and we encourage active learning. There is potential for students to get additional qualifications such as First Aid certification, leadership awards, refereeing qualifications and fitness instructing qualifications. Students will also work with and coach younger pupils from Bebington High and also local Primary Schools and will run sports events based at our school.

Entry requirements

It is desirable but not essential if students have studied BTEC sport in lower school and achieved a Merit grade.


Students are assessed in 7 units in Year 12 and 6 units in Year 13. The units are marked on Pass, Merit, Distinction and Fail criteria. (They are all coursework based. Overall grades are Distinction* (AA*), Distinction (BC), Merit (CD) and Pass (DE).)

Future opportunities

BTEC Sport offers a range of career opportunities including teaching, coaching, uniform services, physiotherapy, sports development, personal training, outdoor education and many others. The skills developed during this course are relevant to all jobs which involve working with the public or presenting to an audience. The course also provides a springboard to a University Degree or Foundation Degree in an appropriate vocational discipline.

BTEC sport is a hugely successful subject. The vast majority of our students go onto study sport at Degree level or follow a career in the industry. The course combines both theoretical and practical elements. All students gain life skills, accreditation and enjoy the course immensely. We are proud of our consistently outstanding results. The 2013 cohort of 10 students achieved 6 Distinction,* 2 Merit and 2 Merit/Pass. We are proud of our students’ achievements and they are proud of our School and Department.

Further information

BHSC is launching a brand new bursary-based initiative for their new cohort of students in 2014 which will attract gifted and talented athletes to the Sports College.

Applications will be open from January 2014 with interviews and a selection process to follow.

BHSC recognises that the cost of elite and advanced-level competition and training are considerable and that there are a number of barriers to overcome for the aspiring student athlete, not least in finding the balance between academic and sporting excellence. The support we are developing will include a bespoke athlete-led curriculum to support the most able sports performers in Wirral Funding will be made available to support young athletes’ training, competition, transport and equipment costs whilst assuring unprecedented access to training programmes. Our students will have an identified mentor working closely with our trust partner: Liverpool John Moores University, National Governing Bodies of Sport and local professional sports clubs and providers.
