GCE Product Design-3D Products/Textiles at Queen Elizabeth's Academy

Course description

Students will be engrossed in product design from day one of the course. Students can expect to be challenged and provoked into evaluating, designing and manufacturing exciting new products that are innovative and stretch the boundaries of conventional design. The course has 50 per cent coursework in order to recognise the importance of practical work within this subject.Staff will give their fullest support to enable students to achieve success when they get involved in the process of designing and making real life solutions.

Course Description

One year AS and two year A2 options are available. A GCSE grade C or above in a Technology subject would be preferable for entry onto these courses.

There are three components which need to be successfully completed.

Unit 1 - PROD1 Materials, Components and Application

50% of AS, 25% of A Level

2 hour written paper

80 marks

Based primarily on materials and components,

relating to 3-D design.

Unit 2 - PROD2 Learning Through Designing and Making

50% of AS, 25% of A Level

Coursework - approx. 50 hours

80 marks

Written (or electronic) design portfolio

Career Prospects

Product Design gives an excellent foundation for continuing into Higher Education design based courses. Past students have gone onto degree courses in Product Design. Problem Solving and practical skills, which are ongoing throughout the course, give a good introduction to related careers such as Engineering, Fashion design, Furniture design, Architecture, and Industrial design.
