BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services at Tameside College

Course description

This is a full time programme where you will be expected to complete 9 units of work in year 1 and a further 9 in year 2. Your work is assessed by your tutors and you have the opportunity to gain either pass/merit/distinction grades in each unit. In addition to this you will undertake a tutorial with your progress tutor each week, where you will get the opportunity to develop other elements such as CV writing, time management, Higher Education preparation and advice on part time job opportunities. Successful completion of the first year of study will see learners gain the 90 Credit Diploma and those completing both years of study will gain the full (180 Credit) Extended Diploma.

Course content

'The course is designed to help develop the skills and qualities you would need to work in the Public Services or to go forward into Higher Education. You will experience a range of activities including classroom based learning, physical fitness training, outdoor and adventurous activities and a comprehensive work experience programme with a wide range of our Public Service organisations.Throughout the first year of the course you will study a range of topics including:• Government, Policies and the Public Services• Leadership• Understanding Discipline• Instructing Physical Activity / Physical Preparation• Crime and its Effects on Society• Land Navigation• Planning & Management of Major Incidents• Skills for Land-based / Water-based ActivitiesThose continuing into the second year of the course will go on to study further topics including:• The Impact of War, Conflict & Terrorism• Outdoor and Adventurous Activities• Crime and Its’ Effects on Society• Command & Control• Exercise, Health & Lifestyle• Major Incidents• Career Planning

Entry requirements

'Learners are required to have 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (new grading system) including Maths & English Language or Literature. Learners are also required to undertake a pre-course interview. Candidates will be expected to be enthusiastic about studying in Higher Education or embark on a career in the Public Services and demonstrate this in all aspects of the course syllabus.
