Design and Technology: Graphic Communication A level at Wilmslow High School

Course description

This course will provide you with an interesting and challenging opportunity to further develop your designing skills and to fulfill your creative aspirations. You will be encouraged to adopt a broad view of design, in order to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, printing, editorial work and marketing, whilst remaining innovative and working towards producing high quality and effective designs.

The graphic design course encompasses a variety of specialist areas ranging from advertising and packaging to television and film graphics, and from creative, individual work to aspects of manufacturing, industrial and commercial practice. The course will provide you with a detailed insight into the work of a designer and alternative aspects of the industry such as editorial and magazine work.

Course content

Most of the subject content is covered through project work reinforced by theory and individual research work, for example, the students instigate an advertising campaign from an initial brief, develop a concept and produce a professional outcome, this can include digital photography and image manipulation using Photoshop. The subject content consists of the following areas of study:

  • Design (including photography), advertising, packaging
  • Illustration (ICT element included)
    books and magazine images,  film/television posters, CD/video cover
  • Logos/corporate identity, information, graphics
  • Printmaking; industrial & commercial practice, product manufacture

Entry requirements

A grade C at GCSE in a Design and Technology or art based subject is required, and a B grade is recommended, as is an interest in design. It is also essential for students following this course to be highly motivated and self-disciplined, since much of the work will require independent research and planning.

A2 Assessments

Component 2
