Biology AS & A Level at Garibaldi College

Course description

The new Biology course will give you an exciting insight into the contemporary world of biology. It covers the key concepts of biology and practical skills are integrated throughout the course. You will learn about the core concepts of biology and about the impact of biological research and how it links to everyday life. You will learn to apply your knowledge, investigate and solve problems in a range of contexts. 

Course content

The Biology course is split into 6 modules:

  1. Development of Practical Skills in Biology
  2. Foundations in Biology
  3. Exchange and Transport
  4. Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease
  5. Communication, Homeostasis and Energy
  6. Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems

Module 1-4 will be covered in the first year and modules 1, 5 and 6 will be covered in the second year.

Entry requirements

Minimum of Grades A and B in Core and Additional Science plus English Language at Grade 5. 



  • Breadth in Biology 50% (Exam)
  • Depth in Biology 50% (Exam)


  • Biological Processes 37% (Exam)
  • Biological Diversity 37% (Exam)
  • Unified Biology 26% (Exam)

There will also be a practical endorsement completed through practical in lessons.

Future opportunities

A Level Biology is an excellent base for a university degree in healthcare, such as medicine, veterinary or dentistry, as well as the biological sciences such as biochemistry, molecular biology or forensic science.

A Level Biology can open up a range of career opportunities including: biological research, medical, environment, forensics, sports and science communication. The transferable skills you will learn, such as problem solving, are also useful for many other areas, such as law.
