Design and Technology - 3D Design AS/ A2 at Dixons City Academy

Course description

The course follows a structured practical course of study that stimulates creativity and innovation and also links to the commercial and industrial world.

Course content

Students research and develop creative design solutions using a variety of modern techniques, materials and state-of-the-art manufacturing processes in dedicated well-resourced studio environments. 

Entry requirements

Students will require at least 5 GCSEs grade C or above, including Product Design at grade B or above.

Assessment

Year 12 AS Outline

Unit 1 (25%) – A written paper based primarily on Materials and Components – 2 hours

Unit 2 (25%) – A portfolio consisting of design work including practical outcomes – 50 hours (approx).

 

Year 13 A2 Outline

Unit 3 (25%) – A written paper based primarily on Design and Manufacture – 2 hours

Unit 4 (25%) – A single major project of the student’s own choice.  The project must include substantial designing and making activity.  It will include a portfolio of design work and a practical outcome.  To run throughout the academic year – 60 hours (approx).

Future opportunities

There is a large range of associated courses running at universities and colleges around the country, covering a wide range of specialisms such as Product Design, Fashion, Interiors, Engineering and Architecture etc. This can lead to a career working within the creative industries or an associated sector.
