Product Design (3D Design) A Level at Malbank School and Sixth form College

Course description

Product Design at Malbank Sixth Form is a well-established course with a track record of fantastic results and achievements. Last year 33% of students achieved an A* grade at A2 level. Teaching staff have commercial design experience and are enthusiastic and passionate about teaching design. Product Design is a creative and technical subject that has many cross curricular links which allows students to play a pathway through projects to their interests and future career goals.How is the course structured?

Course content


  • Unit 1: Materials, Components 
and Application-2 Hour Written Paper - 25%
  • Unit 2: Learning Through Designing 
and Making-50 Hour Coursework Project - 25%


  • Unit 3: Design and Manufacture-2Hour Written Paper - 25%
  • Unit 4: Designing and Making Practice-60 Hour Coursework Project - 25%

Entry requirements

It is recommended that students who take this subject at A level have had some previous experience at GCSE level, in Product Design, Resistant Materials, Textiles, Graphics or Electronics with a at least a C grade. It is not an essential requirement however students would be expected to have a keen interest in Drawing, Designing, Model Making or Designers/Design History.

Future opportunities

Last year 80% of Product Design students left college to continue in education to study Art & Design Foundation courses or BA and BSc Degrees at University. Some courses include: Product Design, Architecture, Sustainable Technologies, Engineering, Fashion, Interior Design, Industrial Design, ICT, Animation, Advertising, Media and Marketing. Other students have gone on to Young Apprenticeship schemes and employment.

What Extra Opportunities are available?

At the end of the year all students have the opportunity to display and present their work in a community design showcase and the opportunity to develop their portfolios. Staff work closely with local FE colleges and University's and regularly have lecturers, past students, designers in college to run workshops throughout the year with AS students. There is an annual trip to Manchester to visit students degree shows for inspiration with future projects. ICT Facilities and workshops in the Design department are always available for students to use in free periods along with additional revision classes during study periods.
