General Studies AS/A at Ormskirk School
The General Studies course has been devised so that students can develop the range of knowledge and skills acquired during their compulsory education years. The underpinning principle of the General Studies course is to empower students to take ownership of their own learning about general issues under the structure and guidance of the General Studies department.Its aim is to broaden their learning experience by including ideas and interests not necessarily covered in the study of specialist subjects and to complement and bring greater variety to their learning. It also equips students with crucial skills such as critical and logical thinking; the ability to use language concisely; the ability to analyse and evaluate data; writing skills, synthesis skills and presentation skills.Why study General Studies? AS and A2 General Studies is a compulsory part of the college’s curriculum.It provides a broad education in preparation for entry into Higher Education or employment General Studies remains a very worthwhile qualification and in particularly important for some students in their application for university. A good grade in General Studies indicates an intelligent, articulate student whose knowledge is not confined to one academic discipline.
This course is a recognised qualification that involves topics from other advanced level courses and can be taken alongside all of them to prepare for higher education. This qualification can often play an important factor in securing a place in a higher education institution. The course is also a good foundation for entry to employment as it provides you with the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
