Course description

Do you have a keen interest in both Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy? Do you enjoy helping people, making them feel their best and delivering the very best customer service? If so, this course will give you the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to start you on a successful career.

Home study is vital for success and students need the determination and commitment to be successful in a very competitive industry. Students will have the opportunity to take part in a range of work experience which will enrich their studies and teach new skills which will be invaluable to employers.

Students may progress straight into a salon as a salon assistant/junior or, the course also provides skills transferable to other subject areas.

Course content

This is an introduction to hairdressing and beauty and working as a salon assistant, providing a stepping stone to Level 2   Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy.

The main programme of study includes: 

  • Introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image in a salon
  • Health and Safety in the salon
  • Shampooing and conditioning hair
  • Dressing hair
  • Styling women's and men's hair
  • Reception duties
  • Skin care
  • Hand care
  • Applying basic make-up and nail art
  • Themed face painting
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English
  • WorkSkills including team work
  • Experience of work

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course but you must be committed and enthusiastic.

Assessments include:

  • Practical assessment
  • Oral and written questions
  • Written tests online
  • Assignment work
  • External written test

    • Our transport provision is shared with HSLC’s home-school transport. The routes shown here arrive at Sixth Form for 8.30am and depart at 3.10pm. Bus passes can be purchased for Sixth Form students from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s website.

      Free twilight buses also run on these routes three days per week at 5.00pm. These give students the opportunity to take part in clubs, societies, catch-up sessions or to use the Sixth Form study facilities.
