Countryside Management BTEC level 3 at The Oxford Academy

Course description

At the Oxford Academy Advance 6th Form, the Countryside Management Extended Diploma offers students the opportunity to develop skills working outdoors in the land based industries. You will mainly work at the Hinksey Heights Nature Trail with the site warden. This site is situated just outside of Oxford, with access to the Oxford Academy Advance 6th form site for written assessment tasks.

This is a full time, largely practical course which is equivalent to three A Levels over two years. The course covers a range of interesting topics which are all assessed through the portfolio of work, collated over time. The projects are designed to help you to gain a thorough understanding of areas such as:

  • Countryside Tourism and Recreation
  •  Woodland Habitat Management
  •  Land Use and Environmental Issues
  •  Investigative Project in the land based sector
  • Developing Estates Skills
  • Understanding Greenwood Crafts
  • The Principles of Wildlife Populations, Ecology and Conservation

Course content

There are a number of potential careers leading from the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Countryside Management including:

  • Nature Conservation
  •  Forestry
  •  Tree Surgery
  •  Commercial Horticulture
  •  Amenity Horticulture
  •  Agriculture
  •  Landscape Management
  •  Working with the Environment

Entry requirements

5 A*-D GCSE including English and Maths level 4

Future opportunities

There are apprenticeships available in many of the fields listed above as well as opportunities for further study where you can undertake land based courses up to degree level. Many colleges specialise in these courses such as Sparsholt College Hampshire, Moulton College in Northampton and Writtle College in Essex. Each college has a dedicated site and offer a range of related courses.

    • We all know it’s not just about what you learn, it’s about how you learn and where. With that in mind, we have created a dedicated Advance Centre which includes its own common room, refectory and study area, just for sixth formers. This gives you the space you need to do joint work, get creative or just have a break. You will also have access to the brilliant library with its specific section for careers and higher education, as well as all the resources you’ll need for your courses. You will be able to use all of our sports facilities, regardless of whether you’re studying a sports related course or not. These include:

      • Sports Hall for futsal, basketball, netball, volleyball, trampolining… anything you want to do indoors
      • 3G Dome – the only covered 3G in the county
      • Astro pitch for hockey and football
      • Multi Use Games Area so you can do a whole host of things here; tennis, netball, table tennis 
      • Grass pitches for rugby, football, lacrosse
      • Physiotherapy room with physio support available by appointment  from  Oxford United physios just in case you need help with an injury
      • Dance studio
      • Fitness studio
      • Cricket nets

      We also have art rooms, a food technology room, a fully functioning theatre and drama studio, recording studio and a hair and beauty salon with treatments available from students studying Beauty.

      When you’re not studying there’s plenty of other activities you can be doing in state of the art facilities. Advance isn’t just about helping you pass your exams, it’s about helping you become the best person you can be and that means you’ve used the space to explore what you love.
