Sport Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Accrington and Rossendale College

Course description

This course is for you if you are seeking to study areas in sport that include sports coaching, development and fitness and are involved with regular sporting activity. This one year full-time programme is an alternative route to gaining the equivalent of four GCSEs. Achievement can be at Award, equivalent to one GCSE, Certificate, equivalent to two GCSEs, or Diploma, equivalent to four GCSEs. Additional courses will be studied alongside the duration of the Level 2 Diploma, such as, NCFE Principles and Preparation for Coaching, Key Skills and various coaching badges. This course offers you the opportunity to develop practical skills and knowledge in Sport through exploring topics in groups and as an individual, both in College and through additional activities. Assessment is on-going throughout the course via coursework which you build into a portfolio.

Entry requirements

Five GCSE’s at grades A* – C (including English and Maths) and a further reference that indicates your ability to study at this level. You will also be required to participate in a College interview and show a keen interest and commitment to being successful in a sports related career.


A mixture of assessments will be used including coursework, presentation, practical assessments but no exams.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of this course, you would be able to progress onto studying a sports related degree at university or seek employment in the sports sector.
