Course description

The Certificate in Financial Studies (CeFS) has been designed to encourage individuals to be inspired to meet their lifetime aspirations. This will be achieved by teaching them to apply the appropriate solution(s) from the wide range available within the evolving financial services marketplace. The qualification will enable students to make informed and confident decisions regarding their finances. It will help students to become responsible borrowers, sensible savers and have an appreciation of the need for financial planning throughout their life.

Course content

 

 

This course is designed to be predominantly a self study course with two periods of tuition on Wednesday afternoons and potential students must recognise that there can be considerable reading involved.  Students will be provided with significant support material including:

online access to learning materials, my ifslearning and ifs Knowledgebank (virtual library), online activities to help consolidate learning, unit syllabuses and revision guide, specimen papers, feedback on objective tests.

It will help students to become responsible borrowers, sensible savers and have an appreciation of the need for financial planning throughout their life.

Assessment

 

Both unit 1 & 2 are objectively tested. Each item will require students to choose the correct answer (key) from a choice of four possible answers. Students should attempt all items.  The unit 3 examination is a written paper, based on unseen case study material, students are required to answer 1 four part question from a choice of 2.

Financial information

The cost of this course to the school is very substantial and students are required to pay a deposit of £50 at the start of the academic year which will be refunded upon completion of the course.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete the Certificate in Financial Studies (CeFS) in Year 12 may study the related Diploma in Financial Studies (DiFS) in the in Year 13 for June 2012. The qualification provides a good grounding for entry into the financial services or financial degrees. Both the CeFS and DiFS are each worth up to 60 points on the UCAS tariff.

    • Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy is situated within a large green site with playing fields at the front and back of the main buildings.  Unlike many new schools, classrooms at HWGA are spacious, and most teachers have their own rooms and are accessible to support students.  Much refurbishment has taken place over the last two years.  Recent changes have included a refurbished library, refurbished and extended Sixth Form Learning Area, five brand new Science laboratories with refurbishment of the supporting preparatory rooms, a refurbished MFL department and refurbished Health and Social Care rooms.  In addition, the school is equipped with a modern  IT network including a cutting edge wireless cloud network throughout the school.  All Sixth Form students are supplied with their own laptops for study within the academy and at home.  The school has two dedicated Performing Art Suites, a Dance Studio and a large hall with high quality lighting rigs, and mechanised seating that provides a flexible performance venue.
