Philosophy and Ethics - AS Level at Hastingsbury Business and Enterprise College

Course description

There are two units to complete the AS level:

Unit 1: Philosophy

This involves studying the key ideas that have shaped philosophical thinking throughout history, from the times of thinkers that have helped define philosophical thought such as Plato/Aristotle and Charles Darwin, to current great thinkers.

Unit 2: Ethics

Ethical theories and Applied Ethics; Here candidates study in depth the various ethical theories such as Kantian ethics and Utilitarianism and then analyse them in practice on the issues of medicine, abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering, and war and peace.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSE passes atA*-C from at least 4 different subjects. Candidates should demonstrate that they have the ability to analyse and discuss large textual information, as well as being able to put their own view aside when needed. C grades in English are a minimum requirement along with the school’s requirements for any entry to AS level courses. Grades in Humanities related subjects will also need to be taken into consideration.
