Music AS & A Level at Christ The King Catholic High School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

There is plenty of scope for a variety of different musicians to undertake this course: you certainly do not have to be classically oriented. A willingness to learn about different musical styles combined with good performance skills are all that is required.

Course content

At AS Level, the subject specifics is comprised of 3 components. These are:

  • Component 1: Performing
    This attributes to 30% of NEA comprising a total performance time of 6 minutes either solo or ensemble. 
  • Component 2: Composing
    This attributes to 30% of NEA consisting of two compositions. One to a set brief of 2 minutes. The second is based on students own brief or that of a set brief, which is 2 minutes long. 
  • Component 3: Appraising
    This attributes to 40% of qualification consisting of six areas of study, each comprising of two set works. These are: Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Music for Film, Popular Music and Jazz, Fusions, New Directions

For A Level, the subject specifics is comprised of 3 components. These are:

  • Component 1: Performing
    This attributes to 30% of NEA comprising a total performance time of 8 minutes either solo or ensemble. 
  • Component 2: Composing
    This attributes to 30% of NEA consisting of two compositions. One to a set brief of 4 minutes. The second is to a brief assessing technique to a minimum of 1 minute.
  • Component 3: Appraising
    This attributes to 40% of qualification consisting of six areas of study, each comprising of two set works. These are: Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Music for Film, Popular Music and Jazz, Fusions, New Directions

Route 1 - Grade B (and grade 6 standard in at least one instrument/voice)

Route 2 - Grade B (and grade 6 standard in at least one instrument/voice)

Route 3 - Not available

Assessment

At AS Level:

  • Component 1: Performing
    Total of 60 marks
    12 available for difficulty of pieces
  • Component 2: Composing
    Total 60 marks, equally split between both sets of compositions
  • Component 3: Appraising
    Total 80 marks from an exam (1 hours 30 minutes)

At A Level:

  • Component 1: Performing
    Total 60 marks
    12 available for difficulty of pieces
  • Component 2: Composing
    Total 60 marks, equally split between both sets of compositions
  • Component 3: Appraising
    Total of 100 marks from a 2 hour exam
