English Literature AS & A Level at Heysham High School Sports College

Course description

The aims of this course are to foster the enjoyment and discussion of English Literature along with the increased understanding of what literature involves.  The emphasis is on getting to know a wide range of texts in depth by close reading and at the same time students are encouraged to think about the contexts in which these texts can be read.

Entry requirements

Grade A/B in GCSE English Language.


Coursework and external examination.

Financial information

Folders and other stationery are needed to ensure work is organised. All texts which are studied for the exam elements of the course are provided.   Students may wish to purchase their own coursework texts.  Access to the internet at home or at school is essential. 

Future opportunities

English Literature is a well-respected A level and stands candidates in good stead when applying to universities, whether to study English Literature or other subjects.  It is at the core of many careers and is complimentary to many arts and science courses. It provides a wide range of options.

If you study English Literature at university it could lead to a career in teaching, publishing or research.
