Art & Design AS/A2 Level at Sheringham High School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

The AS Art and Design course offers an opportunity for students to research and develop a solid foundation to build on for the future. The A2 course builds on that.

Course content

The main emphasis is on the development of technical skills such as drawing and painting. For each project, an A3 sketchbook of around 60 pages is produced, which requires considerable commitment to the subject.Another key area of focus is the research and study of techniques and processes of artists throughout history.

From February onwards students start to focus on their Art exam project and this culminates in a two day practical exam where students produce a piece of sustained artwork to a very high standard.

As they begin A2, students complete a 3,500 word illustrated essay on the history of art. During this essay students will research the major art movements. Practical work includes another 60 page sketchbook focusing on some of the areas researched. Students are encouraged to develop a personal approach focusing on ideas as well as techniques. A further 2 day practical exam is held at the end of the A2 year.
