Language and the Individual and Society

The aim of this unit is to introduce you to methods of exploring and analysing spoken and written language. You will write about a variety of texts from everyday use and explore how language is used to meet the needs of audience and purpose. You will also learn how to write for a range of purposes, audiences and genres and build on some of those skills introduced at GCSE.

In the second year you will study how children learn language and how they are able to understand and express themselves in speech and writing.

Language Varieties

You will study the key concepts of audience, purpose, genre and mode and will explore language in its wider social and geographical contexts. This includes the varieties of English within the British Isles. This part of the subject content also requires you to study social attitudes to, and debates about, language diversity.

In the second year you will explore how and why the English language has changed by studying a variety of spoken and written texts dating from 1600 onwards.

Coursework (A Level only)

You will investigate how language has been used in a range of texts of your choice (2000 word project) and produce a piece of original writing accompanied by a commentary (1500 words).
