Business AS Level at Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy

Course description

You will learn about planning, financing and managing a small business. The course emphasis is on providing practical solutions to business problems rather than applying models or theories. It aims to encourage you to develop a critical understanding of organisations, the markets they serve and the process of adding value. It covers the internal workings and management of organisations in an ever-changing environment and looks at business behaviour from a range of stakeholder perspectives including customers, managers, shareholders/owners, suppliers and employees. You will use many real world examples throughout your learning.

Course content


You will learn through a wide range of methodologies including:

·         use of case studies to illustrate key concepts

·         visits to workplaces to see how businesses actually work

·         visits from and talks by employers in industry and commerce

·         homework/past examination questions/research

·         independent learning/self-directed learning

Entry requirements

Students do not need to have studied Business Studies previously. If they have, a grade ‘B’ in BS is required, if not then at least an average point score of 5.75 including grade ‘C’ in English and Mathematics is required.



Formative assessment during the course will occur informally in class, through your class work and homework and through topic tests.

Summative assessment will be by two written external exams taken in June:

Unit 1 is a 1 ¼ hour exam contributing 40 % of the AS Level marks.

Unit 2 is a 1 ½ hour exam contributing 60 % of the AS Level marks.

There is no coursework.

Future opportunities

A grade ‘D’ or better will enable progression to the A2 Business Studies course. This ‘AS’-level provides opportunities to develop valuable knowledge-based skills and provides a route to move onto degree/professional courses in Accounting, Economics and Finance to name but a few. The skills and knowledge in this course will be of use in any workplace environment.

    • Handsworth Wood Girls' Academy is situated within a large green site with playing fields at the front and back of the main buildings.  Unlike many new schools, classrooms at HWGA are spacious, and most teachers have their own rooms and are accessible to support students.  Much refurbishment has taken place over the last two years.  Recent changes have included a refurbished library, refurbished and extended Sixth Form Learning Area, five brand new Science laboratories with refurbishment of the supporting preparatory rooms, a refurbished MFL department and refurbished Health and Social Care rooms.  In addition, the school is equipped with a modern  IT network including a cutting edge wireless cloud network throughout the school.  All Sixth Form students are supplied with their own laptops for study within the academy and at home.  The school has two dedicated Performing Art Suites, a Dance Studio and a large hall with high quality lighting rigs, and mechanised seating that provides a flexible performance venue.
