Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship at Sheffield College

Course description

As an apprentice you will be dealing with the repair and maintenance of vehicles. You will be working on either light vehicles or heavy vehicles.
 
You will be undertaking a variety of supervised tasks. Your duties will vary depending on where you work.
 
It is likely that you will be working in a small to medium sized vehicle maintenance and repair establishment. You’ll be working in a service technician type role, carrying out routine maintenance and basic repairs, as well as identifying and reporting faults on engines, steering and suspension, brakes, transmission and the electrical systems. You will also cover health and safety in the workplace and use of tools. Each vehicle will present new challenges and it is really important to have good communication skills to be able to explain everything to the customer.
 
The day you are in college you will be doing some workshop sessions in the College workshop working on light or heavy vehicles. You will be given tasks to complete as part of your portfolio. The technical sessions will give you the basic knowledge, teach you new skills and help prepare you for your exams.
 
The course consists of a minimum of 30 hours per week, which includes a one day a week attendance at college. Functional skills in English and Maths also form an important part of your course, there will be exams when you are ready.
 
You are encouraged to look for your own placement. The College will help to find a suitable placement but the emphasis is on you.

An ideal student for this course is one who is motivated and enthusiastic and can work well as part of a team. You must be prepared for hard work and have an aptitude for developing practical skills.
 
Qualification Titles
 
•VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
 
•VCQ Level 2 in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
 
•Employee Rights and Responsibilities
 
•Functional maths, English and ICT level 1
 
You will build a E portfolio of evidence to support the tasks you complete at the workplace to demonstrate you can complete tasks safely and use knowledge learnt.
 
Assessment also includes online exams and written assessments.
 
Where can it lead?
 
You can progress onto the level 3 Apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
 
Possible career opportunities could include working in a maintenance and repair establishment, working for a dealership or going on to own or run your own business.
 

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at 3/D grade or acceptable alternatives including English Language and Maths.

Financial information

Money

At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.

Free meals

If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.

Travel passes

Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

      Olive Grove is The Sheffield College’s home of Engineering, Motor Vehicle, Gas Fitting and Plumbing, just a five minute walk down the road from our City Campus.

      After a recent major investment at Olive Grove, we have provided students with state-of-the-art workshops which include the exact same machinery as out in industry, the latest CAD software, new classrooms and a Learning Resource Centre to keep us at the cutting edge of the changes in Manufacture, Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

      Olive Grove also has a dedicated motor vehicle workshop with tyre fitting machine, wheel balancing machines and car ramps as well as a workshop for body repair and refinishing.

      By Car

      From the M1 use Junction 33 onto the Sheffield Parkway, which merges into the A61.

      At the large roundabout, take the third exit sign posted A61.

      Continue on A61, keeping the train station on your left, until you spot a McDonalds restaurant.

      After the traffic lights turn left on to Farm Road, keeping the McDonalds on your left.

      Carry straight on to East Bank Road for approximately 300 metres (passing a petrol station on your right).

      Olive Grove is on the right hand side.

      Parking

      Parking at Olive Grove is limited to those with Blue Badges, however the Grosvenor Casino (Duchess Road) offers pay-and-display public parking and is only a 5 minute walk from the campus. 

      By Train

      Sheffield Train Station is only 15 minutes from Olive Grove on foot.

      By Tram

      Olive Grove is served by two nearby tram stops – Granville Road/Sheffield College and Park Grange Croft (both stops are on the Blue and Purple lines).

      The central bus terminal is approximately 15 minutes walk from Olive Grove Campus, and there are several other bus stops close by.
