Physics (AS and A Level) at Morecambe Community High School

Course description

From the smallest particles that make up protons and electrons up to the size of the universe itself- A level Physics encompasses pretty much everything on the way… including

  •   The forces that ‘rule’ movement and change
  •   The way that atoms give out or absorb waves (or particles!- photons) of energy.
  •   How atomic particles interact- and the forces that hold matter together.
  •   The magnetic, electric and gravitational fields that govern the way the universe

works… and even more. The Course

‘A’ Level Physics is a mixture of theoretical and practical Work.
You will develop a wide range of skills, which will be relevant in other subjects and in what in whatever career path you follow.
    These skills include

  •   Applying theory to practical examples
  •   Communicating knowledge and concepts.
  •   Making precise observations, drawing conclusions and evaluating evidence
  •   Using ICT to record, present and analyse experimental results.

‘A’ Level Physics is good to study with…
Maths (if not studying A level Maths you must be competent at GCSE maths) Other Sciences

(Combining Physics with a language is useful for certain University course choices)

‘A’ Level Physics is needed for University Courses such as Physics, Astrophysics, Engineering and useful for courses such as Medicine, Veterinary Science, Applied Maths courses.

    A level Physics Units

4 units are studied over the two years and are assessed in four exams

Unit 1 –Practical skills ; which are taught as the content for Units 2,3,4 progresses. (planning investigations, tabulating and graphing data, concluding/ evaluating reliability of results)

Unit 2- Foundations of Physics- Forces, motion and energy; Electricity; Waves and the electromagnetic Spectrum; Quantum physics and the wave-particle duality.

Unit 3- The Newtonian world and Astrophysics- Kinetic theory of particles/ thermodynamics, circular and simple harmonic motion, Gravitation, Cosmology

Unit 4- Particle and Medical Physics- Capacitance and Electric Fields, magnetic fields, sub-atomic particles, X rays and Medical Physics

There is no examined practical work as in previous years. Practical skills are tested in the Unit Exam.

Students taking AS Physics would sit Units 1 and 2 in the May of Year12. Units 3 and 4 content will be taught from June of Year12 onwards.
