Mathematics A level at Edmonton County School

Course description

Mathematics is a much valued subject. If you are considering a career or further study in ICT, Accountancy, Engineering, Economics and the Sciences you should seriously consider continuing to study Maths. This subject will also support your Sixth Form studies in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Psychology and Economics. 

Course content

You will study many of the concepts learnt at GCSE, but at a more advanced level, as well as many new areas of Mathematics.

In year 12 you will study: the Core 1 and Core 2 units, plus one application unit, Mechanics 1 or Statistics 1.

In year 13 you will study: the Core 3 and Core 4 units, and Mechanics 1 or Statistics1, depending  on which  you studied previously.

The Statistics unit focuses on representing and summarising data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution.

The Mechanics unit focuses on vectors; kinematics of a particle; dynamics of a particle; statics of a particle; moments.

Entry requirements

At least a ‘good’ Grade B, or better,  in the GCSE Higher Tier Mathematics examination.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course will enable progression onto both further and higher education, a Modern Apprenticeship or employment in a range of industries.
