Food Science and Nutrition A Level at Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form
The study of Food Science and Nutrition will develop an understanding of the physical properties of a broad range of food ingredients and components, including consideration of the life-cycle of products through their manufacture, use and disposal. Study of the principles of nutrition and the social aspects of food choice for individuals, offers practical opportunities to apply Food Science knowledge
Why study Food Science and Nutrition?
Food Science and Nutrition builds on scientific principles already studied at GCSE and offers the chance to be creative through coursework. This subject develops an understanding of the factors that influence our diet today and as such is an excellent preparation for any further study/career involving human health and behaviour.
At the time of printing, this qualification is still under review. There will be confirmation and details available in a separate flyer at the Sixth Form Open Evening. The food course offered will be at a level that supports progression to higher education degree courses such as BSc Food and Nutrition, BSc Human Nutrition, BSc Food Science and Technology. Assessment of the course will be through both controlled assessment/coursework and examination. The development and application of practical food skills will be an important aspect of the course.
Students looking to study Food Science and Nutrition should have achieved a Grade C or above in GCSE Food and Nutrition or Catering.
An understanding of Food Science and Nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Care providers and nutritionists in hospitals use this knowledge, as do sports coaches and fitness instructors. Hotels and restaurants, food manufacturers and government agencies also use this understanding to develop menus, food products and policies that that support healthy eating initiatives. Many employment opportunities within the field of Food Science and Nutrition are available to graduates.
