Animal Care Level 2 Extended Certificate at Newbury College

Course description

This course is ideal if you have some basic skills, perhaps to start work in a pet shop, animal shelter or kennel. This course develops the knowledge and skills you need to work with animals, from managing a pet shop or grooming dogs to caring for exotic animals. Some of the units may include how to maintain animal accommodation, contribute to the care of exotic animals, principles of animal biology, maintaining animal health and welfare and other related subjects such as animal first aid. Learners will also study functional skills English and Maths, a Skills Project, Tutorial and have an Individual Learning Study session. This course is delivered in fourteen and a half hours per week. This course is a full time course requiring learners to complete 30 credits. The qualification followed will be the EDEXCEL BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care.

This course is a full time course requiring learners to complete a 60 credit course. The qualification followed will be the EDEXCEL BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care.

There are 4 units to complete:

  1. Principles of Animal Biology
  2. Maintain Animal Accommodation
  3. Undertake Practical Animal Feeding
  4. Maintain Animal Health and Welfare

Progression then leads to three further modules for the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care.

Entry requirements

Students will need to have five GCSE passes at grade D or above, preferably including Maths and English. Alternatively, students will be accepted onto the course if they have an equivalent vocational qualification at merit grade, and Functional Skills Maths and English, preferably at Level 1. All students must have achieved, or show the ability to achieve, Maths and English to GCSE grade D or equivalent. Where a student has not yet fulfilled this requirement, a functional skills qualification is a mandatory part of this course.
