Course description

Should I do Geography AS/A Level?

Course content

AS includes the following units:

  • Global Challenges:

The meaning, causes, impacts and management of global challenges.  This will include the study of natural hazards and climate change and also globalization, population and migration.

 

  • Geographical Investigations:

A close look at how physical and human issues influence lives and can be managed.  This will include one physical and one human topic.

 

 

Sixth Form

A2 Level includes the following additional units:

 

  • Contested Planet:

The use and management of resources.  Topics to be studies include energy security, water conflicts, biodiversity under threat, superpower geographies, the development gap and the role of technology.

  • Geographical Research:

Research in depth into a geographical topic:

Tectonic Hazards.

Entry requirements

Along with the minimum requirement of 5 GCSE passes at grade C and above, you will need a minimum grade B in Geography if you have studied it at GCSE and we will expect you to have a minimum grade B in English at GCSE Level. 

Assessment

There are termly assessments and internal examinations throughout the course. In addition, at the end of Year 12 you will sit two external papers:

Unit 1:  Global Challenges, Written Examination

Final percentage 60% of AS

Unit 2: Geographical Investigations, Written Examination Final percentage 40% of AS

At the end of Year 13 you will sit two external papers:

Unit 3: Contested Planet, Written Examination

Final percentage 60% of A2

Unit 4: Geographical, Written Examination

Final percentage 40% of A2
