Business Retail BTEC Level 2 at Shipley College

Course description

Are you outgoing and interested in sales and customers having the best shopping experience?

On this stepping stone in to the growing retail industry, you will study customer relations, business planning, financial control, business networks and online sales.

The group undertake a structured work placement at Sainsbury’s to learn about business from an industry perspective.

Course content

Units you will study include:

  • Enterprise
  • Law and Consumer Rights
  • Merchandising
  • Marketing
  • Customer Service
  • Branding
  • Finance

You may also need to study GCSE or Functional Skills in English and maths. Improved English and maths grades will help to make students more employable and improve CVs or personal statements.

Entry requirements

  • 2 GCSEs at grade D (3) or above, including English


  • a Level 1 at Pass grade, plus a GCSE grade D (3) in English.
  • You will have an interview and further assessment to check the course is right for you.


The course is unit-based and is assessed internally and externally with a Pass, Merit and Distinction grade. The assignments will require learners to apply their learning from the classroom and carry out research in order to successfully progress through the course.

You will also take GCSE or functional skills English and maths depending on your grade profile. These will require learners to take end of year externally set tests.

Financial information

Learners are expected to provide their own stationery and ideally a USB to save their work. There is a course text book that the college can order and the learners can purchase at a discounted price.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of this course, you can move on to the Business BTEC Level 3 or an Apprenticeship in Business Administration.

You could also find work in the many retail opportunities opening up within West Yorkshire.

Alternatively, you may move in to a different career pathway, using what you have learnt including Creative Digital Media Production, Computing or Travel & Tourism.

Further information

This is a 1 year course. In addition to time in college you will need to spend some time on homework and assignments that are given to you by the tutor.
