Science at St Aldhelm's Academy

Course description

GCSE Science covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics and How Science Works.
It is assessed through 3 exams and a controlled assessment. In Biology, plants, animals and microorganisms are studied as well as the environment they are living in. More recent scientific developments are covered such as GM crops and clinical trials. In Chemistry, elements, metals, fuels as well as considering the chemical origins of life are dealt with. In Physics, waves, light, sound, and energy transfers are studied.

In Year 11 the content will be covered in more depth, along with some additional content. In Biology, the human body, genetics and evolution is studied. In Chemistry, polymers, food additives and methods of analysis are covered. In Physics, elasticity, stars and radioactivity are studied. It is examined in the same way as GCSE Science with 3 exams and a controlled assessment. As a result, two scientific GCSEs are covered over two years. Some students may also be invited to attend after school classes in order to achieve Triple Science.
