Mathematics AS Level at Lady Hawkins' High School

Course description

AS Level Syllabus: Edexcel

Mathematics is not about learning facts. You will not achieve success by just reading a textbook or by producing and revising from detailed notes . . . you actually need to “do” mathematics.

Mathematics is a highly respected A Level and helps students who study it open more doors to different career pathways. Mathematics is essential for medicine and science, engineering, accounting - and is becoming increasingly more popular in careers involving ICT and research for its problem solving and thinking skills.

What key skills will I learn on this course?

The course helps students develop a number of skills, including:

  • Using mathematical skills and knowledge to solve problems
  • Solving problems by using mathematical arguments and logic
  • How to simplify real-life situations so that you can use mathematics to show what is happening and what might happen in different circumstances
  • Using mathematics that you learn to solve problems that are given to you in a real-life context

What kind of student is this course suitable for?

This course will appeal to students who:

  • Are not afraid of hard work and effort
  • Want to achieve an A Level that is highly respected by Universities and employers

What opportunities may I have beyond the classroom?

  • UK Maths Team challenge which is an opportunity to compete against the top Mathematical students in the country
  • Bowling is a fantastic opportunity to see how Maths is used in gameplay – this links with a topic in Decision and enhances students understanding of this

Financial information

Financial Assistance

Herefordshire Council expects sixth form students to pay £270 per term for transport to sixth form. There is a 16-19 Bursary Fund which may give some students financial support. Please contact the school for further information.

For eligible students, the Bursary Fund can provide financial assistance to young people whose access to, or completion of education is inhibited by financial constraints or barriers. The fund can help towards the cost of essential course-related costs such as travel to sixth form, equipment, books and educational visits including to university open days or interviews.

EMA

EMA is for 16 to 18 year olds living in Wales, who want to continue their education after school leaving age. If you’re eligible, you could get £30 a week, paid every two weeks.

You don’t need to study in Wales to get EMA. As long as you live in Wales and you meet the criteria then you can apply for EMA.

You must adhere to the learning contract in order to receive the payments. Failure to attend lessons and/or registrations will result in no payment for the corresponding week.
