Design and Technology (Product Design) A Level at Paget High School

Course description

Product Design students build upon the skills learnt during KS4, improving upon their creative imagination and design skills to solve everyday issues. They will also build upon their drawing, modelling and making expertise, allowing them to be able to present skilful 2D and 3D replicas of the products they plan to make, as well as fully working prototypes after selecting the correct materials to use.


The course outline is officially in draft format at the moment. From what has been released so far the course will be assessed in three ways, a long coursework element that asks candidates to develop a solution to a design problem. There are two exam type papers one is a formal written paper and the other is a challenge that combines creative, modelling and analysis skills in an exam conditions environment.

Future opportunities

Students can pursue their interest in Design Technology at degree level at university. Areas of employment that could follow include being a Product Designer in one of the many fields of design including Resistant Materials (furniture), Textiles (fashion) and Food or becoming an Industrial designer or Mechanical Designer. Careers can also include Architecture, Interior Designer, Exhibition Designer, Kitchen Designer, 3D Product Design.


Students must be able to show an enthusiasm for using their imagination to develop new, exciting and interesting products. We require students to be committed to learning new skills and to have the motivation to produce quality products, both within lessons and during their own time.
