Apprenticeships - Level 2 Apprenticeship Framework 512 - Plumbing and Heating at Wakefield College

Course description

This course is suitable for those starting a career in plumbing. This programme will enable you to achieve a formal qualification whilst developing the skills relevant to industrial requirements and give you the opportunity to work on your Functional Skills.

Two pathways are offered: - (1) NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating and (2) NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Installing and Maintaining Domestic Heating system.



Course content

During your study you will cover a range of knowledge and skills, these will include the following: -

Health and Safety
Communicating with others
Environmental protection measures
Scientific principles
Site preparation 
Domestic Cold water
Domestic Hot water
Domestic Central heating
Domestic rain water systems
Domestic above ground drainage
Plus, the two on-site NVQ units

Maths, English and IT are key elements of apprenticeship programmes and if you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C (or new grade 9-4) in these subjects you will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate levels.

Skills in Maths and English will support your apprenticeship programme, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4). This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

How you will learn

You will attend College one day per week (9 am to 6 pm) for two years.  You will spend around half of your time in the College workshops refining the skills that you using in your workplace, and the other half in developing the theoretical knowledge required through classroom activities such as formal lectures, resource-based learning and practical tasks.

Entry requirements

Candidates must have an employer willing to support the requirements of the apprenticeship framework AND Recommended 4 GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4), including Maths and English


All practical activities will be assessed in the college workshop. Theory multi-choice papers will be taken during the course, with two papers at the end.

Future opportunities

Further study

On completion of Certificate Level 2, you will be required to achieve NVQ Level 2. Your tutor will advise you on this process.

Career opportunities

Once qualified to level 2, the apprentice can become either a commercial or site plumber. Progression to level 3 is required for supervisory experience and the potential to run your own business.
