Course description

Exam board: AQA Team Leader: Ms B. Perkins, Why take it? Pathway? This is a course for students who are good at and enjoy Maths. To take this option you must be comfortably working at a secure level 7 or 8 in for Maths. This course is ideal for students who want to study Maths in the sixth form as well as those who want to study science AS without taking Maths in the sixth form. As well as building up your maths skills, especially algebra it helps you understand how maths can be used to explain the world around you.. Assessment % breakdown (controlled assessment and external exam) 50% on exam. 50% coursework Tiers on entry All students take higher level, this is a level 3 course and therefore equivalent to an A level qualifi cation. You have to be working at level 7 by the end of year 9 to take this course. Requirements for A level/ Laswap If you want to follow a mathematical pathway this subject provides you with an excellent opportunity to support post 16 courses. Description of course The approach of the course will be to study Maths through longer projects and during the course students will build up a portfolio of work that counts for 50% of the assessment. The course deals with areas of Maths that are equivalent to higher GCSE and AS Maths and students will learn to: • Use algebra and graphs to explain and prove as well as to solve real life problems. Examples of projects Why is a baked bean tin the shape it is? Investigate different dimensions of cylinders to show that the size chosen it the most economic. Eventually going on to understand a branch of maths called calculus which proves the facts that you can read from graphs. Will women ever catch up with men at athletics? Use world record data from the last 100 years to make a formula for mens progress and a formula for womens progress – use graphs and equations to see if the paths cross. Make a speed time graph of the fi rst 5 minutes of the fi lm Zorro – use it to work out how far he travels, by fi nding the area under the graph.
