Health & Social Care BTEC Level 1 Certificate at Havering College of Further and Higher Education

Course description

You will study a broad selection of units that have been handpicked to best prepare you for progression on to further study and potential employment within the health and social care sector.

Course content

You can expect to cover the following topics related to the industry:

  • Starting Work in Health and Social Care
  • Working in Health and Social Care
  • Developing Skills in Health and Social Care
  • Personal Effectiveness
  • Social Responsibility at Work
  • Financial Management
  • Looking After Children
  • Images of People
  • Health and the Environment
  • Exploring Local Services

You will also complete a work experience placement within an area of health and social care.

If you have not yet achieved a grade C (or above) in GCSE English and maths, you will be required to attend GCSE resit sessions (if you achieved grade D) or functional skills sessions (if you achieved grade E or below).

Entry requirements

  • At least 4 GCSEs at grade D or above (including English & maths)
  • A good reference
  • A DBS criminal record check (£44 to process)


You will complete written assignments and practical projects both in the classroom and on placement. The evidence generated will serve as an end of year portfolio of your work.

Future opportunities

You could progress onto our Level 2 Health and Social Care Diploma.

Employment opportunities could involve work at a junior level within the industry as you train to gain further qualifications via an apprenticeship.
