Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 at Exeter College

Course description

This apprenticeship framework has been designed specifically for people working in a school and supporting children’s learning.  The main qualification has been designed to provide an introduction to the practical skills and knowledge required in a teaching assistant role and will provide occupational competence to work under the supervision of a class teacher. You will also be studying employment rights and responsibilities and personal learning and thinking skills.

This is a course which lasts one year. You will attend college for one day a week to cover the underpinning knowledge and complete your functional skills.   Your tutor will set assignments to assess the underpinning knowledge and there will be examinations for functional skills. Your assessor will arrange to see you in your work place to assess your competence. An Online portfolio system is used which is accessible to you 24/7.

Course content

There are 10 mandatory units which cover various aspects of your job role including child development, safeguarding and supporting learning. You will be able to choose one optional unit which specially relates to your job role.

Entry requirements

You need GCSE English and maths at grade D or above. You need patience, understanding, a strong desire to work with people and good communication skills. 

You must have employment  as an advanced apprentice in an School for a minimum of 30 hours, complete a DBS Disclosure (formerly CRB) with your employer  also have good levels of literacy and numeracy. You will be interviewed and assessed at college for suitability and the college Skills Recruiter will work with you to secure employment.

Unless you have an exemption you will be required to complete;

  • Maths-level 1
  • English –Level 2
  • ICT-Level 1

You can purchase a text book costing approximately £20.


Future opportunities

Once you have completed this course you may be eligible to work towards the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Advanced Apprenticeship. You may also secure employment as a Teaching assistant.
