English Language at Reepham High School and College

Course description

This is a natural choice for many students as it enables them to progress skills they have developed at GCSE. But it isn’t just more of the same! English Language A-level allows you to look in a more scientific and deeply analytical manner at language use, and offers the opportunity to become a highly competent communicator. You will work with a wide range of non-fiction and media texts, exploring how images, layout and language contribute to meaning.

You will then apply your knowledge to the creation of your own texts. Other topics of study include the (often controversial) language and gender, language and power, language and technology – just how has texting affected language use today? – language change, and the fascinating child language acquisition.

Many students find that English Language is complemented by A-level Psychology, Media and even science subjects due to its analytical nature. The qualification is recognised and valued by universities. Many students of English Language continue to study Linguistics at university.
