English Language and Literature A Level at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School

Course description

English Language and Literature (Combined) A Level offers the opportunity to study the literature of many people and places as well as English language and creative writing. This is a flexible, wide-ranging subject that is beneficial to a number of career choices (from teaching to journalism to the Arts – to name but a few). English students develop skills in written and spoken communication, working independently and thinking critically, which are highly valued by employers.

English Language and Literature A Level gives you the opportunity to:

• Build on the literature and language skills and knowledge that you already have from GCSE, reading novels, plays and poetry from various times and cultures

• Develop your creative writing skills

• Discuss and explore texts you are reading in a small group environment

• Read in more depth and detail than you have been able to at GCSE level

• Read the words of the inspiring, often unconventional creative writers of different times and cultures

• Explore works written by both men and women

• Develop your analytical, discursive and independent study skills; skills which will support all other A Level/ degree courses

This course develops your communicative, exploratory and analytical skills and is an excellent one for leading to a range of university courses. Contrary to popular belief, teaching is not the main occupation of English graduates; many go into law, general management, research and consultancy and the public services as well as publishing and the creative industries. Statistics also show English students perform better than many other graduate groups in finding employment.

English has a long standing and respected base in higher education: “You develop the insight of an artist, the analytical precision of a scientist and the persuasiveness of a lawyer.” (Prof. Moran, Brunel University)
