Art & Design BTEC First Diploma at Riverside College Halton

Course content

The course provides an introduction in art and design practice, history, and theory. You will study a range of art & design subject areas where you will be able to develop and learn new skills in painting and drawing, print making, graphic design, computers in art & design, pottery & ceramics, 3D design (working in metal and plastics) and the history of art & design Assignments form the basis of project work, which will be completed by you during taught workshop sessions and in your own time at home or in the College learning centre. You will study four core units throughout the year, and two Final Major Project units in the third term. You will work within dedicated workshop areas in the Riverside College, Halton, Runcorn Campus.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade D or above including English or an Introductory Diploma in Art and Design. You will need to bring a portfolio of work to your interview.


Assessment is continuous. You will be marked on both practical and written project work which will provide the evidence on which your grades will be based. There is no formal exam at the end of the course.

Future opportunities

On completion of this qualification you may progress onto a BTEC National Diploma course in your chosen area of art and design. You will be advised and assisted in your choice of progression by your course tutors.

Further information

You will be expected to provide a basic art kit containing a range of painting and drawing equipment, a sketchbook and plastic portfolio. A list will be given to you at interview. You may also be required to purchase specialist materials for your project work.
