Food, Nutrition and Health at Neston High School
This course allows students to develop an understanding of issues relating to society and health, resource management, nutrition and food production. Over the course students will also:
develop and apply knowledge, understanding and skills to meet human need in a broad range of activities develop an awareness of the management of resources to meet an identified human need in a diverse and ever-changing society, including values issues take account of rapid technological changes and the growth of scientific knowledge and understanding
It is an excellent course for students wishing to pursue careers in nutrition, dietetics, food science, sports science, food technology, social work, health service, industrial food development and consumer protection.
Examination Description AS Level: Students are required to complete two units:
Society and Health,which is an examined based unit worth 50% of the AS Level. This unit looks at:
* Family and society
* Key issues for society
* Environmental and social issues.
Resource Management, which is an examined based unit worth 50% of the AS Level. This unit looks at:
* Food provision
* The selection and purchase of food and household goods
* Food preparation and cooking equipment
* Food safety and hygiene.
A2 Level: Students are required to complete two units:
Food, Nutrition and Health Investigative Study, which is a coursework based unit where students select their own content and develop their own task in relation to any area of food, nutrition and health.
This unit is worth 50% of the A2 Level.
Unit G004: Nutrition and Food Production, which is an examined based unit worth 50% of the A2 Level.
This unit looks at:
* Nutrients and energy
* Groups with nutritional and dietary needs
* Properties of food
* Design, development and production of food
* Developments in the food industry
4 A* - D with 1 C in key Subject
