Fine Art A Level at Hayesfield Girls' School and Mixed Sixth Form

Course description

Why study this subject at Hayesfield?

With a track record of great success in students moving on to art school and careers in the field, Fine Art is a subject for those who enjoyed GCSE Art or Photography and are interested in the potential for creative study, either as a complement to other subjects or as a pathway to a future in the creative industries.

We offer an open working environment where advice and help is always on offer from our team of very experienced teachers and an A level external examiner. We are immensely proud of how many of our students progress onto higher education courses from Hayesfield.

Course content

Introductory unit building and experimenting with materials and processes to build a successful sketchbook.

Portfolio project based on an area of personal interest to promote individuality and development of ideas.

Internally set exam project with a choice of A Level themes, a preparation period for sketchbook work then a timed exam to work on outcomes.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 or above in GCSE Art, Photography or Arts related subject with portfolio and summer project.


Personal Investigation - 60%

- extended and personal body of work that includes critical writing of between 1,000-3,000 words.

Externally Set task - 40%

- Responding to themes set by the exam board

- Roughly 6 weeks preparation time then a 15 hour exam.

Professional artist and designer, graphic designer, textiles/fashion designer, illustrator, animator, photographer, architect, designer, engineer, teacher.
