Media Studies A-Level at Tavistock Community College

Course description

The first year of this course is an AS level qualification and consists of 2 units of study. The student may continue to study for a second year in order to gain an A2 qualification. The units studied at AS level are as follows: • Unit 1 is a practical project in which students will produce either four pages of a music magazine OR a two minute opening sequence of a new feature film. Students will also produce an online blog in which they demonstrate all of the research and planning that they have undertaken in creating the production work. Students are able to work in small groups for the practical but all research and planning, as evidenced on the blog, must be individually produced. • Unit 2 is exam based. Students learn how to analyse a moving image text and will develop expertise in areas such as cinematography, sound and editing. The first part of the summer exam will ask them to analyse a moving image sequence as selected by the examiner. For the second part of the exam, students will undertake an in depth study of a media industry as selected by the teacher. Previous areas studied include print and online newspapers and, for the exam in 2013, the British film industry
