Public Services : BTEC Level 3 at Gateway College

Course description

This course enables you to develop your confidence and interpersonal skills; there is a strong emphasis on developing personal discipline through individual and team activities. During the course you may take part in visits to a variety of Public Service organisations, listen to talks from guest speakers in the sector. The course offers an insight into careers in the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services, Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force, Prison Service, Security Organisations, HM Customs, the National Health Service, and Social Work to name but a few.

This qualification is equivalent to 1 A Level.

 

Course content

The course will be enhanced with outside speakers coming into college from the Army, RAF and Police.

Examples of units that will be studied over the 2-years and will be assessed through coursework. Units studied include:

Unit 01 : Goverment Policies

Unit 02 : Leadership and Teamwork

Unit 03 : Citizenship, Diversity and the Public Services

Unit 05 : Physical Preparation, Health and Lifestyle for the Public Services

Unit 08 : Understand the impact of War, Conflict and Terrorism on Public Services

Unit 10 : Skills for Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Unit 17 : Police Powers in the Public Services

Unit 31 : Exercise, Health and Lifestyle

Unit 35 : Land Navigation by Map and Compass.

 

Extended Diploma

Unit 04 : Understanding Discipline in the Uniformed Public Services

Unit 06 : Fitness Testing and Training

Unit 12 : Crime and its effets on Society

Unit 13 : Command and Control in the Uniformed Public Services

Unit 14 : Responding to Emergency Service incidents

Unit 21 Custodial Care Services

Unit 22 Aspects of the Legal System and Law -making process

Unit 24 : Current and Media in Public Services

Unit 29 : Security Procedures in the Public Services

 

 

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C / 9-4 including English Language grade 4

Assessment

Assessed by the completion of assignments given by a set deadline.

1st Year : 90 Credit Diploma

2nd Year : Extended Diploma

Free to all home students.

Future opportunities

Students can join the armed forces, progress to university or obtain an apprenticeship within their selected field. If you are considering a career in any of the uniformed or non-uniformed services this course may be for you.
