Art and Design - BTEC Level 2 at Bristol Brunel Academy

Course description

Bring out the artistic side in you with art and design level 2 and explore a wide range of media

You are also given the opportunity to develop and apply skills in English and mathematics in naturally occurring, work related context. You will apply the skills and knowledge gained from the core units when studying the optional units.

Course content

Year 1

Unit 1: Introduction to Specialist Pathways in Art and Design
Unit 2: Creative Project in Art and Design
Unit 3: Communicating ideas in 2D
Unit 4: Communicating ideas in 3D
Unit 5: Developing an Art and Design Porfolio
Unit 6: Investigating Contextual References in Art and Design 

You will be given the opportunity to study in at least three of the media listed below:

  • Design Crafts
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • Photography
  • Product Design
  • Visual Arts
  • Visual Communication 
Year 2

This is a one year course with the possibility of leading to Level 3 Art & Design.


Entry requirements

Minimum Academic Standard for Progression into Y13

Entry into Y13 is not automatic in CLF Post 16.

The majority of students will continue into Y13 dependent on the entry criteria for courses as outlined below:

For BTECs all students must attain a minimum vocational standard of passes for successful progression.

Students who do not meet the entry requirements into Y13 will be given guidance about a change of study programme and relevant courses available. They will not be allowed to re-sit the same core learning aims (i.e. subjects) as they did in Y12.


25% externally set, internally marked and externally moderated work.

This course provides both the starting point for possible further study within art or employment in an extensive range of creative, administrative and technical roles. The wide range of companies in the sector include those that design and make craft products, those that operate in the fashion and textiles sectors or provide product design services, and those in the wide-ranging visual arts and visual communications sectors.
